Jim: Hi, Li. Can you help me with my term paper on Chinese literature?
Li: Sure. It’s a subject that I really enjoy.
Jim: I am supposed to write about a favorite Chinese poet. But I don’t have one. Do you? Can you help me
choose one for my paper?
Li: I like lots of Chinese poets. Maybe you should start with a Tang Dynasty poet. Their poems are short and
simple, and fairly easy to understand or translate into English.
Jim: Which ones do you recommend? Which ones are the most famous?
Li: I think you should certainly look at Li Bai. But you should also consider Du Fu.
Jim: Which poem or poems should I read first?
Li: I think you should start with Li Bai’s very famous poem about the moonlight coming through his bedroom
window and making him feel homesick. I don’t know its English title but I’m sure the reference librarian
could help you find it in the university library.
Jim: Why is this poem so special?
Li: Every Chinese child learns this poem in school, and it contains some familiar themes that are often found in
other Chinese poems, such as moonlight and loneliness.
Jim: How can I find more information about this poet and his poems?
Li: You can easily look for information about him on the Internet. You might find some of his poems there too.
And there are also some English translations of Chinese poems in the foreign language bookstore downtown. |
