British Columbia became a Canadian province in 1871. With this new addition, Canada extended from Atlantic to Pacific. To maintain that area, however, and to ensure its independence from the United States, it was necessary to build a railway to the west coast. The effort to organize a company to undertake this enterprise was made in 1872. The last spike of the Pacific railway was driven on November 7, 1885.
