Passage One

On 11 December, 1979, Mother Teresa went to Norway. She went to receive the greatest prize in the world—the Nobel Peace Prize. She stood in her blue and white sari in front of hundreds of important people. She spoke simply. She had no notes. She told them of the poverty and sadness in the world.

She received the prize of $190,000 not for herself but for the poor people of the world. She used the money to feed hungry people, to give homes to those who have nowhere to live, to give help to the sick and the dying . In fact she received more than $190,000. There was not the usual Nobel banquet in 1979. The money which was saved on the banquet bought meals for fifteen thousand hungry people.

The Nobel Peace Prize is usually given to famous politicians, but Mother Teresa is not a politician. She is a nun, the Mother Superior of the Missionaries of Charity. She received the Nobel Peace Prize because her whole life has been given to loving and helping people.

Passage Two

One day, sixty-year-old Henry Ford went down a mine. He lay on his back in narrow tunnels (坑道) and cut the coal from above his head. He came out black, wet, stiff and sore. He told his manager to make the tunnels wider and to improve and repair the miners' houses.

When he got tired of waiting for the railways to deliver his coal, Henry Ford bought an old railway which ran between Ohio and Detroit. People laughed. But he ran that railway and, at a time when locomotives burnt coal and made everything dirty, his engine sheds and stations were painted white and kept that way.

He did not like the quality of the glass he was getting for his windscreens. So he bought a glass factory, improved it, and became—quite by accident—one of the world's biggest glass producers. And yet all he wanted to do was build cars.

He was interested in everything, in radios, clocks and planes. He flew with Lindbergh just before the famous pilot made his first flight alone across the Atlantic. He even began to build planes.

Meanwhile, Henry and his wife Clara were as happy a couple as ever. They both loved birds, and often watched them together. Once, when a bird made its nest by the front door, everyone used the back door until the mother bird had brought up her family.

They also loved dancing, even in old age, and organized dancing classes for the school children in their town.

Running was Henry's favorite exercise. Early one morning a guest on the Ford private train noticed that they were going rather slowly. He looked out and saw Henry Ford running along behind the train, getting his morning exercise.

Passage Three

Dr Benjamin Spock died of natural causes in 1998. During his lifetime he had been a children's doctor, a pacifist, a presidential candidate, and one of Yale University's most famous athletes.

Born in 1903, Dr Spock is best known for his 1946-book Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, the best-selling book in the world after the Bible. He published 12 books in all, including Caring for Your Disabled Child and A Teenager's Guide to Life and Love.

One of his lesser-known achievements is his Olympic gold medal. In 1924, as a member of the Yale team, he sailed with seven others to Paris and won an Olympic gold medal, setting a world record of 5:51 over a 2 000-meter course on the Seine River.

Unlike earlier baby experts, he suggested loving care instead of strict disciplines. He had a huge influence on the way that most of the kids in the 50s were raised.

Spock believed that people of the world should live in peace. He took part in protest marches against the Vietnam War and nuclear weapons. He was arrested several times at the Pentagon and the White House for protesting against American defense policies. In 1972, he ran for President with the People's Party, receiving about 80 000 votes.

Spock will always be remembered for his contributions to humanity.
