Passage One
We have learned that energy can
produce changes in matter. When the change does not alter the
identity of a substance, it is called a physical change. Cutting
wood is an example of physical change.
The transformation of energy often
does alter the identity of a substance. Such a change is called
a chemical change. Burning wood is an example of chemical change.
In the cutting of wood, we know that
its identity is not altered and no new substance is formed,
hence the wood has undergone a physical change. But the burning
of wood has altered its properties and new substances-gases
and ashes-have been formed, hence the wood has undergone a chemical
change.
