He arrived at Beijing Airport and was immediately impressed by how modern everything looked. He also remembered one of the customs officers told him, “Well come to China!” That certainly made a good first impression. He spent his first night in China in a hotel near the airport. That was winter time and the temperature to him was COLD! The next morning, he looked out from his window and was surprised to see people riding bikes to work. He thought that Chinese must be tougher than Americans.
That day he traveled by air to Changchun. The city looked gray and depressing in winter. David felt a little gloomy. But he soon learned that the people of Changchun are warm and friendly. He was invited to a few friends' homes and was impressed by their hospitality. Chinese have a wonderful way of making a guest feel at home. There is always fruit on the table for the guest to enjoy. Someone always makes sure the guest never sits alone with no one to talk to. Sitting in the bedroom and watching TV remind him of his own home. In America, bedroom is really a private place that guests seldom enter. David told his families and American friends all about this and invited them to visit China.
Chinese homes may be smaller than American homes in size. But size doesn't make a home warm. It's the people that make a home warm. David thinks that the thing that has made the greatest impression on him is the ability of the Chinese to enjoy life! |
