Directions : There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Passage 1
Very high waves are destructive when they strike the land. Fortunately, this seldom happens. One reason is that out at sea, waves moving in one direction almost run into waves moving in a different direction. The two sets of waves tend to cancel each other out. Another reason is that water is shallower near the shore. As a wave gets closer to land, the shallower bottom helps reduce its strength.
But the power of waves striking the shore can still be very great. During a winter gale, waves sometimes strike the shore with the force of 6,000 pounds of each square foot. The means a wave 25 feet high and 500 feet along its face, may strike the shore with a force of 75 million pounds.
Yet the waves, no matter how big or how violent, affect only the surface of the sea. During the most raging storms, the water a hundred fathoms (600 feet) beneath the surface of the sea is just as calm as on a day without a breath if wind.

Passage 2
Dr. Harvey Gates, the noted scientist, might never have discovered the Kamron lizard in Blovia, if it had not been for a childhood accident. As a youngster he was determined to become a baseball player, but when be broke his arm in practice at the age of fourteen and was forced to stay of f the playing field for a while, he took notice of the natural world around him and liked what he saw.
After the cast had been taken off his arm, he caught a squirrel and raised it as a pet. Soon he was bringing home snakes, and other creatures from the woods near his school.
In 1962, he entered Blakeford College and majored in biology. By 1966 he had received his Bachelor of Science degree and two years later at Drysdate University , he received his Doctor of Science degree.
It was while he was doing field research for his doctoral dissertation in South America in 1967 that he discovered and named the Kamron lizard. This reptile was distinguished from others of its kind by the fact that it had only four toes on its front feet. In other respects, it was similar to others of the same family. It could change its color and go for long periods without food.
Dr. Gates received his appointment as a professor at the University of Huntsford in 1970.

Passage 3
If you have to miss one meal a day (or if you want to do so), which meal will
cause you fewest health problems if you don't eat it? If they have to make a decision of this type, most people (especially dieters or very busy people) will choose to skip breakfast.
However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast (the meal which "breaks" your "fast" which started the night before) to be the most important meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients we need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully with good humor. Nevertheless, many people skip breakfast or substitute a donut and a cup of coffee for a well-balanced meal. What happens if we ignore the importance of breakfast?
One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participant included both males and female who ranged in age from 12 to 83. During the experiments, these people were given a variety of breakfasts ,and sometimes ,they had to skip breakfast completely. Special tests, Including blood tests and endurance tests, were set up to analyze how well the participants' bodies functioned when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.
The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast, he or she will work more efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person's work involves mental activity. The study showed that if schoolchildren eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast diet is inadequate.
The study also showed that, contrary to what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and eat up gaining weight instead of losing .So remember, if you are on a diet, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.
