Passage 1

Advertising has become a very specialized activity in modern times. In the business world of today, supply is usually greater than demand. There is great competition between different manufacturers of the same kind of product to persuade customers to buy their own particular brand. They always have to remind the consumer of the name and the qualities of their product. They do this by advertising. The manufacturer advertises in the newspapers and on posters. He sometimes pays for songs about his product in commercial radio programs. He employs attractive salesgirls to distribute samples of it. He organizes competitions, with prizes for the winners. He often advertises on the screens of local cinemas. Most important of all, in countries that have television he has advertisements put into programs that will accept them. Manufacturers often spend large sums of money on advertisements. We buy a particular product because we think that it is the best. We usually think so because of the advertisements that say so. Some people never pause to ask themselves if the advertisements are telling the truth.

Passage 2

The economy in the United States is heavily dependent on aluminum, a material widely used in the construction of buildings and in making such diverse things as cars, airplanes, and food containers. In 1979, Americans used over five million tons of new aluminum, and one and a half million tons of recycled aluminum. Some ninety percent of the bauxite ore from which new aluminum is normally derived had to be imported to meet the demand. Poorer ores are abundant in the United States , however, and researchers at Purdre University may recently have found a way to extract aluminum magnetically from these.

Although aluminum is not attracted by ordinary magnets, under special condition it becomes temporarily “ paramagnetic”, or very weakly responsive to a magnetic field. This is achieved by immersing ore particles in water to which certain salts have been added and then filtering the ore through steel and wool in the presence of a strong magnetic field. It is hoped that this technique will reduce the amount of high-grade aluminum the United States must import.

6) The main topic of the passage is _____.
  (A) Business Development in the United States
  (B) Consumption and Production of Aluminum
  (C) The paramagnetism of Aluminum
  (D) Research in the United States Universities

  (B) exporting
  (C) manufacturing
  (D) investment

8) According to the passage, to meet its annual aluminum demand the United States must _____.
  (A) import ninety million tons of ore
  (B) import ninety percent of the ore it needs
  (C) produce fifty percent of the world's supply
  (D) produce fifty million additional tons .

9) It can be inferred from the passage that bauxite ore in the United States is ______.
  (A) rare, but of high quality
  (B) rare, and of very low grade
  (C) plentiful, and of high quality
  (D) plentiful, but of low grade

10) Paramagnetism refers to the phenomenon in which _______.
  (A) magnetic materials lose their power
  (B) some substances become slightly magnetic
  (C) steel and wool magnetically attract each other
  (D) a magnetic field appears in water

Passage 3

For most people, life is easier and more comfortable than ever before. Convenience foods from the supermarket simplify shopping and cooking. Household appliances like the vacuum cleaner and the washing machine have taken the drudgery out of housework. Released from these household chores many wives have found jobs outside the home. Women are achieving economic independence.

Families, too, are simpler today. In America it is not customary for parents to live with their married children. With our greater mobility, relatives have scattered, the parents retiring to Florida or Arizona and the young people, after they marry, going wherever their jobs or their interests take them.

Young adult women have new freedom, too. While attending college, they often live away form home, sometimes far from their parents or their relatives. After college, they move to the city, find a job, and set up a “bachelor” apartment. This is the era of women's liberation. But all this freedom and affluence have had an unforeseen and in some respects a destructive effect on marriage.
