David has been an English teacher for over 20 years. He has worked in several foreign countries and in the US he has taught students from different countries in the world. He is impressed by the level of English in China although many people feel their English level remains weak.
He recognizes that Chinese teachers and students do not have the same access to native-speakers that learners in some countries have. Chinese students are not able to travel easily to English-speaking countries to improve their English. David thinks the most unique characteristic about Chinese learners who master English well is their diligence. Many students take extra English classes after school or on the weekend. At the bookstore he is amazed at the number of books available for students to buy. Chinese students are willing to invest a lot of time, money and energy to learn a foreign language.
David give s us some advice. First, he has the impression that English learners here are overly concerned with correctness. Both teachers and students should realize that when speaking with a foreigner the message is more important than the delivery. They should try to forget about grammar rules and concentrate on what they want to say.
Another piece of advice is that do not stop when you can not find the exact word you want to use. You should always try to find a way around a word you don't know. For example, the word “camera” can be replaced by “the thing we use to take pictures”. This strategy is called “avoidance”. Remember, no one word is that important. |
