Practical Writing: Holiday Insurance

When a holiday is to be taken abroad it is a wise precaution to insure not only against loss of baggage and other personal property but also against personal accident and illness while away from home.

The costs of medical and hospital care when on holiday must be borne privately and can be very high. In return for a small premium many insurance companies now provide coverage for this. Travel agencies are usually willing to make the necessary arrangements.

(a) Application

Dear Sir,

　　I will be touring Italy and Sicily in a 1996 Peugeot 405 GL for 4 weeks commencing
July 3.

　　Please let me know the terms and conditions on which you could issue a policy to cover loss of and damage to baggage and other personal property. I would also like to consider coverage against personal accidents and illness, and would be glad if you would send me the details. The car is already separately insured.

　　I hope to hear from you soon.

(b) Insurer's Reply

Dear Mr. Sanderson,

　　Thank you for your letter of June 8 regarding insurance to cover your tour of Italy and Sicily.

　　I have enclosed a leaflet setting out the terms and conditions of the insurance for both personal property and injury and illness, and also an application form. The coverage for injury and illness extends to the full cost of medical and hospital treatment and of any special arrangements that may be necessary for your return home.

　　Please complete and return the application form by June 26 at the latest, so that we can be sure of issuing the policy in time.
