To
love is to be human. Love is an everlasting theme of human life. We
may go through varying love in our life. It may be a mother's nurturing
love for her child. It may also be a son's loyal love for his father.
Here what we are going to have is a love story between a man and a
woman. But it is different from the solemn pledge of young lovers.
What really strikes us is the deep love between these two persons.
In the story they don't utter one word to express love for each other,
yet the descriptions such as "much-handled snapshots", a
tree "covered with yellow handkerchiefs" enable us to sense
clearly the love in its deepest and purest form between the husband
and wife. At the end of the story when the old oak tree covered with
yellow handkerchiefs came in sight that looked "like a banner
of welcome billowing in the wind", we readers can almost see
in our mind's eye the wife waiting for the return of her husband impatiently.
It is this scene that gives a touch to the bottom of our heart.
