Birthday
is an anniversary of the day of one's birth. So it is an unforgettable
date in everyone's life. The most significant birthdays are celebrated
when a person reaches the age of 60 and every ten years thereafter.
The reason for this is the belief that youth lasts from birth to 32
years of age, middle age from 32 to 40 years of age, and old age from
40 to 60 years of age, so that a new cycle of life begins at the 61st
birthday. |

In
China, people traditionally have noodles on birthday, which symbolizes
longevity. But in the West, it is customary to hold a party and share
the birthday cake with relatives and friends in celebration of a person's
birthday. The guests who are invited will come to the party with birthday
presents to express their good wishes and say "Happy Birthday"
to the birthday person. Birthday presents are always opened in front
of the guests, which marks the climax of the party. And the birthday
person thanks them for the presents they have brought. At the party
food and drinks are prepared and served. Towards the end of dinner,
the lights in the room are turned off, and someone comes in from another
room with a cake on which are lighted candles. At the sight of the
cake, the guests begin singing "Happy Birthday to You" and
the birthday person makes a wish before blowing out the candles on
the cake. It is said that the wish will become true if all the candles
go out in one puff. After that, the cake is cut in slices usually by
the birthday person, one piece for each guest. When the party comes
to an end, the guests wish the birthday person "Happy Birthday"
again and leave. |
