This text is a piece of argumentation,
in which the author aims to convince the readers of the importance
and benefits of turning off TV for an hour every evening. The
whole discourse is well-organized and clearly expressed. At
the beginning the author directly puts forward his suggestion
of turning off TV for an hour every evening and then develops
a list of analysis of the advantages of other activities as
a substitute for watching TV. In the last paragraph, the author
restates the value of his suggestion to refute some opposing
ideas. In order to make his argument serious and convincing,
the author uses a plain style of language. Generally speaking,
the words chosen are formal, the sentences used are long with
clauses. In citing evidence to support his idea he takes care
to use unemotional sentence patterns such as " it is well
known that...." to show the objectiveness and truthfulness.
Yet, the author also employs some rhetorical devices to reinforce
his argument such as metaphor
and irony
in the phrase " baby-sitter".
argumentation(议论文)
is one of the four writing types, is characteristic of such
five basic features in common: a well-defined theme (topic sentence),
sufficient evidence, good logic, clear organization and an honest
and friendly style.
Irony(讽刺) is the contradiction of vehicle
and tenor.
For example,
Every time we trusted Democrats, they cheated.
Such kindergarten compliments were happily returned.
每一次我们信任民主党人，他们就欺骗了我们。
这种幼稚的恭维话我们都高兴地接受。 |
