This text is a piece of third person narration
about a boy’s experience of delivering a sad telegram to a Mexican
woman. The vivid description of the characters’ psychological
activities plays a leading role in the style. The story begins
with the boy’s eagerness to learn about life and ends in the
boy’s bewilderment to cope with life. Some expressions also
have symbolic meaning to show
embarrassment and the woman’s control of herself. For example,
the boy stood “awkwardly as near the door as he could and still
be inside the house”, showing that he felt guilty for bringing
the tragic news and wanted to escape but his sense of responsibility
and tender nature prevented him from doing so. As the woman
was unwilling to accept the truth too early, she would not touch
the telegram and asked the boy some questions whose answers
she already knew. The boy felt even more awkward and at last
he “swiftly” spoke out the truth. The sentences here are very
short, showing the boy’s desire to get rid of the oppression
and his fluster in doing so.
