(Hello, everyone. Today we'll take up a new lesson, Unit Nine
THE BRAIN THE MOST POWERFUL COMPUTER IN THE UNIVERSE. We'll
finish learning this lesson in 6 periods. In the first three periods
we'll study the text and try to understand it well. We'll learn
the new words, phrases and the useful expressions, study the language
points and the sentence patterns or structures used in the text,
work out the structure of the text and analyze the stylistic features
of the text. In the next three periods we'll do the follow-up exercises
and focus listening and then come to the reading and writing practice.
At the end of each period of the lesson, you should finish the assignment
from the teacher, which will help consolidate what you have learned
in class.
Now, before we come to the text itself, let's first get some information
related to the text and learn the new words.)

Introduction to the Text |
The
human brain, as the most complex organ in the body, is the seat of
the man’s memory, consciousness, reasoning, thoughts and intelligence.
The evolution of the brain enables man to speak, think, reason and
produce creative ideas. Memory is its main function. It can store
an immeasurably large amount of information, which dwarfs any existing
computers in the world. These abilities have kept the scientists busy
thinking about how the brain works.
The
earlier researchers only could advance some unproven assumptions for
the workings of the brain. But the modern scientists, with the aid
of the advanced electrical devices, have made experiments by using
tiny amounts of electricity to stimulate and prevent the activity
in the certain parts of the brain. They discovered that the nerve
cells in the brain produce electrical signals and each of the different
part of the brain is generally associated with certain functions,
but no one part is entirely responsible for any one function. And
the biochemists also found that the chemical reactions keep taking
place in the brain at a fantastic speed. Though these discoveries
have shed light on the workings of the brain, the scientists are still
far away from being fully aware of the truth about the brain, for
so many questions on the brain remain unanswered.
However,
to human beings’ delight, these findings of the working principles
of the brain have ushered in a new era of man’s scientific study—study
of Artificial Intelligence , which uses computers to copy the way
the brain works. The scientists aim to equip the computers with the
abilities to obtain knowledge, store information, calculate, and even
make sound judgments and decisions as the human brain does.
From
this text, you will get to know the scientific discoveries made by
the modern scientists of the basic process going on within the brain.
