An Equally
Important Side to the University
|
|
There
is more to University life than studying.
Take Lancaster
University for example.
Through the Students Union there is every conceivable
type of club or society covering virtually all sports and activities
as diverse as the SCUBA club and Film Society. For many students
the clubs and societies present them with an opportunity to
experience a new activity.
The University is college based and each student becomes a
member of one of the nine campus colleges. The colleges form
the social centres for student life. They provide self-catering
accommodation as well as the recreational facilities which allow
students to meet with each other. All the colleges provide a
snack bar while many have a restaurant. The University also
has a variety of shops from a supermarket and a hair salon through
to a newsagent and a travel agent.
Lancaster city itself is small but lively. An historic city
that was once a major sea port provides all that is necessary
to enjoy free time. It has all the social facilities you would
expect. There is a small, but highly regarded theatre company,
which is famous for its promenade plays in the beautiful Williamson
park. The University also has its own respected theatre company
and there are several local amateur dramatic and operatic
societies. Live music is also a highly enjoyable aspect of Lancaster
life catering for all tastes. There are also numerous night
clubs in Lancaster including the Sugar House run by the Students
Union.
Eating out is a pastime for many students, and the city has
a variety of restaurants to
suit every pocket and taste, from curry
houses through to Italian and fish 'n chips. Several give a
discount to students.
Jonathan Wood attended North Bolton Sixth Form College in
Bolton, Lancashire, earning grades A, A, A in Maths, Physics
and Chemistry. He chose to study at Lancaster both because of
the campus setting and the course offered.
According to him, an equally important side to the university
is the social life. He said, "One of the reasons why I
have had such a fantastic time here is undoubtedly due the people
I have met, and meeting people at Lancaster really couldn't
be easier."
Asked whether he would choose the same university if he was
to do it all again, he answered with an emphatic yes. He said,
"Lancaster has given me not only a highly recognised degree,
but has also given me the chance to meet people with whom I
will remain friends for the rest of my life."
