Communicative Tasks : Task 1 Key for reference: close Tan: Welcome to China. We hope you have a very pleasant visit. Peter: I've never been to China. What are the most interesting things to see in Beijing? Tan: Everyone wants to go to the Great Wall and the Summer Palace. I can take you there. But first we should see Tiananmen Square. It's pretty close to your hotel. Peter: Where is the Forbidden City? Tan: It's pretty close to your hotel also. We can go there this morning if you wish. Peter: Let's see the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square today and go to the Great Wall tomorrow. Is that a good plan? Tan: That's excellent. The next day we can go to the Summer Palace. In the evenings we can go to the Beijing Opera and have some Beijing Duck. Is that a good idea? Peter: I think you'd make a great tour guide. Tan: I'm just a volunteer. But I hope you have a wonderful time. Peter: Your hospitality is much appreciated. I think China is the friendliest country in the whole world.

Situation: Tan, a volunteer tour guide, is meeting Peter, a new foreign guest, at a hotel. Peter has no knowledge of Beijing, so it’s Tan’s job to make sure Peter is happy and to help plan his activities. Role play their conversation. Tips: Here are some things Tan can say or ask: Did you have a good trip to Beijing? Would you like to see some historical and cultural sites? Do you enjoy music? How about Beijing Opera? Are there any special places you’d like to visit first? Many foreign tourists visit the Great Wall at Badaling. Almost everyone wants to see Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City. Beijing has many beautiful parks and gardens. While you are here you should certainly eat Beijing Duck. Here are some things Peter can say or ask: I just arrived today from London and I will stay for a month. My flight was a little late and I still have jet lag. I know there’s not enough time for everything, so can you help me organize my activities? I like history and culture but some museums can be boring. I’ll be glad to eat Beijing Duck, but I also want to try some (Hunan/Sichuan/Cantones) food and some local beverages.
