Passage H
The University of Sydney

Part I Remarks from Vice-Chancellor

Welcome to The University of Sydney's Website
Our University was the first to be established in Australia and, after almost 150 years of proud achievement, still leads in innovation and quality.
Challenging, professionally relevant courses and degrees which are prized throughout the world are the hallmark of the University of Sydney's programs. Liveliness and creativity are ensured by the fact that our staff are themselves engaged in high level research and scholarship. Active learning is the business not only of our students but of their teachers too.
The University of Sydney excels in sport and social activities, debating, drama, music and much more. It is our firm belief that it is the overall university experience - not just classroom learning - which determines the richness of student life and provides the true preparation for future life. Employers who seek out Sydney graduates agree.
Students and staff at the University of Sydney work together to foster an environment of social tolerance informed by critical enquiry. We are committed to investigating new ideas, exploring and analysing the best of the world's humane tradition of scholarship and developing the benefits of research. We are proud to be part of a famous history, and we understand that the future depends on the achievements of today.
  Gavin Brown
  Vice-Chancellor and Principal

Part II Studying at the University of Sydney

Studying at the University of Sydney offers you the opportunity to choose from the most diverse range of courses provided by any Australian university. Our staff are committed teachers, as well as leading researchers of international standing, encouraging intellectual excellence and critical inquiry.
We offer a wide variety of challenging, up-to-date undergraduate and postgraduate courses, in disciplines ranging from engineering to music and health sciences to law. Our outstanding facilities include the largest library collection in the southern hemisphere.
Several services are available to support you through your studies, including careers advice to help you plan your future. There is a vibrant campus life at this culturally diverse University, many venues for socialising, numerous clubs and societies and world-class sporting facilities.
The University of Sydney is part of an expanding network of academic collaboration. Its links with overseas institutions cover research and consulting activities, staff and student exchange and community development.
The presence of international students on campus enhances the University's cultural life and adds depth to the academic experience. In 2001, more than 3,700 international students from over 70 countries were completing full degree programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The University's academics are involved in collaborative research projects with colleagues overseas, with governments and with other organisations to further knowledge and improve people's lives. In the Australian Research Council's 2001 International Researcher Exchange Scheme, University of Sydney researchers won awards to work with institutions in Europe, China, the United Kingdom, Japan and Russia, and many of the University's research centres have an explicitly international focus, including the Asian Agribusiness Research Centre, the Institute for International Health, the Australian Centre for Innovation and International Competitiveness, the Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific, and the Securities Industry Research Centre of Asia-Pacific (SIRCA).
