Personality is a complicated thing. It includes
your likes and dislikes, how you react to things, how
you express yourself, and many other characteristics
that are unique to you. It’s important to understand some
of these attributes about yourself when choosing a career.
A career that does not fit your personality will result
in a string of jobs that you either hate or cannot succeed
in. On the other hand, a career that fits your personality
will lead to success and job satisfaction.

When I took the Kiersey Character Sorter, my personality
was categorized as the Healer Idealist. A Healer Idealist
tends to value meaningful relationships and has a strong
capacity for caring. Their tendency is to want to
heal conflicts. They will work hard to benefit someone or
something they believe in. They have a strong sense
of right and wrong and seek after wisdom. They tend
to be adaptable and patient with complicated situations.
They are strongly aware of another’s feelings and relate
well to them, but also work well alone. They have a keen
interest in scholarly activities and usually want to use
their gifts to help others.
There are several careers I could consider that would
fit my personality. One is a career as an electronics engineer.
Electronics engineers work to design, develop, test, and
supervise the manufacturing of electrical and electronics
equipment. This includes aircraft, automobiles, electric
power generation, motors, communication equipment, and
computer hardware. Another possibility is the job of an
aerospace engineer. An aerospace
engineer works to design, develop, and test systems related
to aircraft (both military and commercial) and space
exploration. They typically specialize in one area
of expertise
such as propulsion
or guidance and control systems. A third career option
of interest to me is that of Graphics Designer. Graphics
Designers design art and copy layouts for visual
media. This includes books, magazines, advertisements,
and web pages. Any of these careers would be a reasonable
match for my personality type.
There are a number of ways in which these careers are
a fit with my personality. Electronics engineering attracts
me because it involves details, creative problem solving,
hands-on work, and organized thinking. It requires strong
math and science skills, which are both strong areas for
me. It pays well, allowing me to help my family achieve
our financial goals such as helping my sons through college
and contributing towards our retirement savings. The job
of Aerospace Engineer is similar. It requires similar skills,
but also includes an area of interest to me, space. It also
tends to pay well, but the jobs in that field are scarcer
which may make finding a job in that field more difficult.
Graphics design is visual and hands-on. It would utilize
my strong visual skills; however, it often requires long
hours to meet deadlines, which is something I don’t
really like. On the other hand, it also frequently involves
self-employment and working from home, which would be a
plus for me. However, I don’t think I would do well
having to promote myself in order to generate contracts.
I will probably continue to pursue electronics engineering
as the best choice for me.
Finding the right career for you can take time and energy.
It will require a lot of research and thought about the
various options and how each one would fit with your personality
and interests. In the end, you will find that the time and
energy spent are well worth it.
