6.6 Words and concepts

  Earlier in this chapter it has been shown that word meaning involves both reference and sense. Reference relates the sign to what it denotes in the world. Sense relates the sign to the mind. It is logical, then, that words are related to concepts. The relation between words and concepts has become a central topic in cognitive semantics since 1970s. This section introduces three areas of study of meaning from this new perspective.
