Every week
during the Christmas season a poorly-dressed, elderly
gentleman would appear in a certain store where he sampled
puddings, but never bought any. He didn’t seem to come
for badly want of food, because sampling puddings once
a week would not prevent a person from starvation. Obviously,
he had come down in the world and sampling pudding — perhaps his favorite dessert before — might bring
him back a sweet memory of his past days. Seeing the
old man couldn’t afford a pudding, a young man who happened
to be in the store felt pity for him and offered to
buy him one. On hearing the young man’s offer, the old
man jumped back in great astonishment. He was so hurt
that he immediately decided to buy one to save his honor.
He took out all his money —
some coins and pennies — and bought one of the largest and most expensive puddings.
This old man was indeed a proud poor man. |
