The Prairies

The Endless
Prairie
|
East
of the Rockies lie the prairie provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan
and Manitoba, Canada's breadbasket.The prairies
are flat and featureless
and have a harsh continental climate. The winters are cold
and the summers are hot, but the terrain is well-suited to
farming. During the late 1800s, the Canadian government encouraged
the settlement of the prairie provinces by offering cheap
land grants to Europeans who would emigrate
and settle there. Over
3 million people, mainly from
continental Europe came, tempted by the cheap land
and high price of wheat.

Prairie Life

Wheat
is one of Canada's biggest agricultural crops and in China,
you have almost certainly had some noodles made from wheat
which was probably grown in Saskatchewan. Alberta is the country's
main beef and feed
producer, and Manitoba—known
as the Land of 100 000 Lakes—produces hydroelectricity as
well as a wide variety of crops and livestock.
The prairies are also rich in energy resources.
