Intonation Sentence Stress

I. Directions:In English, nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs, demonstratives and negative particles tend to be stressed. Listen to the following phrases or sentences carefully and mark the words that are stressed. Notice that they are read louder than other words.(10 points). (10 points)

Example: a 'nice 'place
1. Just a moment.
2. You're welcome.

4. right in front of you
5. at this time of the day

7. go for a walk in the park

II. Directions: Listen to the following five proverbs carefully. Repeat what you hear and mark the stressed words. (10 points)

3. Well begun is half done.
4. Rome was not built in a day.
5. Failure is the mother of success.
