The Rocky Mountains

All of the places mentioned so far are to the west of the Rocky mountains,

The Rocky Mountains

which are themselves worth touring. There is a National Park covering the central Rockies, but there are also many state parks dotting the area from the Canadian border down to the southern part of the range in New Mexico where one can picnic and hike and enjoy the landscape. The streams in the Rockies are a trout fisherman's paradise. Also, various old mining towns still retaining a certain 19th century charm provide entertaining sites to visit. During the winter months, travel along the roads is difficult because of the snow. Yet it is the snow that attracts many people to such towns as Aspen and Vail, where skiing down mountain slopes is the major attraction.
