Cloze
(Cloze is one method of testing one's vocabulary as well as
reading comprehension. The following exercise will help you
to consolidate the words and phrases you have learnt in your
text and meanwhile improve your reading ability. It consists
of two parts. In part A the initial letter of each missing word
is given. In this case, you are informed that each dash in the
blank signifies a word. It is not only a clue to but also a
prerequisite for the exercise. The words needed are mostly significant
content words. Therefore, it is a test of vocabulary. In part
B, there is no obvious clue to each blank. But the passage supplies
adequate guidelines to you. The framework should be sufficient
to serve as your guide. The words needed here are either content
words or function word (功能词). This exercise is more difficult
than part A. When doing this kind of exercise you need to go
over the whole passage for the first time so that you get the
main idea of the whole text. Then with your knowledge of grammar,
