Task 1
1.Once
there was a little boy from
Seattle named Paul. He hit his
finger with a hammer and it
hurt a lot. There was nobody
around at home to help him,
so he picked up the phone to
call "Information, please."
This is how Paul got to know
a very kind operator named Sally,
who became his friend later.
2. After
Sally got to know that his mother
was not at home, she told him
what he could do to make his
finger stop hurting and help
it heal. Fortunately he wasn't
bleeding. Following her advice,
he chipped off a piece of ice
from the icebox and held it
to his finger. From then on,
Paul got a lot of help and concern
from Sally. For example, she
helped him with some of his
lessons. And when his pet bird
died she tried to comfort him,
by convincing him that the bird
was going to sing in other worlds.
When he was in his teens, he
left town and grew up, but he
kept thinking about her.
3. A
few years later, on his way
to college, he passed through
Seattle while changing planes
for another town. He had thirty
minutes, so he dialed "Information."
When he heard Sally's voice
he asked his usual question.
To his surprise, she still recognized
his voice and even made a joke
about his hurt finger. Sally
encouraged him to call her again.
4.Three
months later he returned to
Seattle and called for Sally,
but another operator answered,
The operator told him that Sally
died five weeks before. After
making sure he was Paul, the
operator said Sally had left
a message for him that (like
the dead bird) she had other
worlds to sing in. Paul understood
what she meant.
